Please meet Amal Kanafani, Community Ambassador for Syria!

It is with great honor that we present the award for our first Community Ambassador for Syrian Refugees to Amal Kanafani, at our #Canada150 celebrations in #Mississauga, on March 31st, 2017.

She came to Canada 4 years ago as a Syrian Refugee. Amal began volunteering at her local community centre and went on to secure several community-based leadership roles. Two years ago she founded Auntie Amal Community Centre which currently serves low-income people across the GTA. It also provides a range of services which includes; a community garden, a community kitchen that serves food to the homeless once a week, a furniture and clothing bank for newcomers and new born baby supplies. She also utilizes shared spaces to celebrate diverse cultural events that bring together community residents. Through her organization, Amal has not only addressed vital service gaps but also empowered other newcomers by hiring them and providing meaningful Canadian experience. Most recently, the centre has helped to settle over 100 Syrian refugee families across the GTA, and furnished over 600 homes.
